I am a PhD candidate studying Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of Western Australia. Working under the Marshall Centre for Infectious Diseases, my research involves the identification of potential enzymatic targets for the development of novel antimicrobials against the highly pathogenic bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. My PhD project specifically investigates a number of genes within two essential metabolic pathways of the bacteria, biotin and folate de novo biosynthesis. Through the generation of deletion mutant strains, and recombinantly expressed proteins, my project aims to characterise these critical genes and delineate the function of the proteins which they encode.
