Phil Thomas
Phil is research student at the University of New England in Armidale. He studies the ecology of microorganisms and their relationship with plants, and is currently investigating the root microbiome of hydroponic glasshouse tomatoes. Modern technology such as DNA sequencing and bioinformatics computer software is revolutionising our ability to unravel the immensely complex interactions between microbes, their environment, and the plants and animals that they live with. As our understanding expands, we find that microorganisms touch every part of our world, from health and nutrition to agriculture and natural ecology. With a background in information and communications systems integration, Phil is focused on the effective application of bioinformatics tools to understand and predict the behaviour of the hydroponic microbiome.
