Luis Pedro Coelho Australian Society for Microbiology Annual Scientific Meeting 2024

Luis Pedro Coelho

Dr. Coelho holds a PhD in computational biology from Carnegie Mellon University (2011). From 2013 to 2018, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) under the supervision of Peer Bork, where he shifted his scientific focus to microbiome research, in particular metagenomic analysis. From 2018 to 2023, he was a Junior PI at Fudan University, leading a computational microbiome research group. In August 2023, he will join the Centre for Microbiome Research at Queensland University of Technology as a Group Leader. Dr. Coelho has demonstrated the ability to lead and execute large-scale microbiome projects. For example, the recently published the Global Microbial Gene Catalog, version 1 (GMGCv1; Coelho et al., Nature 2022) used data from >10,000 metagenomes to produce a catalogue of 303 million genes, which were grouped into 30 million families. One of the conclusions of the project was that while most genes are habitat-specific, antibiotic resistance genes are more likely than others to be found in multiple habitats. He has also developed several widely-used tools for processing metagenomes, such as NGLess and SemiBin. These are developed following best practices in the field to ensure reproducibility.
