Sohinee Sarkar
Dr. Sohinee Sarkar, a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia, is dedicated to pioneering research in the battle against antimicrobial resistance. Her expertise lies in developing novel therapeutics against antibiotic-resistant pathogens causing ailments like gastritis, urinary tract infections, and respiratory infections.
Dr Sarkar’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology from Manipal University, India, in 2007. Dr. Sarkar received her PhD in Microbiology from the University of Queensland in 2014, complemented by an Advanced Master of Biotechnology from the same institution in 2009.
An integral part of Dr Sarkar’s research endeavours is the establishment of preclinical infection models for the validation of novel antimicrobials for treating genitourinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal infections. Her research extends to the intricate realm of host-pathogen interactions of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli, Helicobacter pylori, and Mycobacterium abscessus. Working closely with industry and academic collaborators across diverse projects, her current investigations include the development of biotherapeutics aimed at preventing stomach cancer and diseases associated with Helicobacter and identifying innovative treatment options for non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Additionally, she delves into the complex landscape of mucosal immune responses to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Through these multifaceted projects, Dr. Sarkar contributes significantly to advancing our understanding of infectious diseases and developing innovative solutions for their prevention and treatment.
