When Anatomical Pathology meets Microbiology - The interface (102097)

It occasionally happens that an Anatomical Pathologist will seek an opinion from Microbiology in relation to a histological finding that is suggestive of a microbiological diagnosis. The spectrum of specimens and potential diagnoses range widely. These include but are not limited to viral inclusions, fungal hyphae, nematodes, trematodes, microsporidia and amoebae, various bacteria and mycobacteria. Tissue responses are also varied and at times cannot be relied upon to support a diagnosis. A variety of short cases with relevant histology will be discussed . An awareness of what may be found in Histology, that is relevant to Infectious Diseases is useful to the microbiologist when unexpectedly faced with the request to "have a look at this".
